Crank by Ellen Hopkins
In life, everyone has their up's and down's, but what if you didn't have control over your actions all the time. In the book "Crank, by Ellen Hopkins" the main character, Kristina is a regular teenager. This all changes when she goes on a vacation to see her dad and comes back home as Bree. Kristina's sweet personality must of been left in Albuquerque. Bree is daring and dangerous, the total opposite of Kristina. This not only surprises her family but it opens up a whole new world for Bree to take risks and hang out with all the wrong people. This book shows readers that having a two sided personality can be dangerous and confusing because half the time you don't have the power to say no or you don't have the strength to fight against your mistakes.
When people are going through tough times they often turn to drugs and alcohol. This happens to Kristina in the book " Crank, by Ellen Hopkins." As soon as she started to hang out with different people her whole world was turned upside down. This all happened when Kristina was in Albuquerque. In the book Kristina said, " I mean, there I was,/snorting crank/with my dad,/my boyfriend,/and his other/girlfriend." This was very surprising because a father should be stopping their children from making the wrong decisions. Kristina's father is encouraging her bad behavior and her transformation into Bree. Kristina doesn't know this, but she can't find someone to guide her in the right direction. If her father isn't making the right decisions who is Kristina suppose to look up to.
Kristina was also thinking, " It seems to Kristina you gotta be crazy to open your windows, invite the demons in. Bree throws rocks at the feeble glass, laughs. " Kristina knows and understands her two different personalities. She just doesn't know when to be Bree and when to be Kristina. This is what gets her into trouble with drugs. Kristina knows when to say no, but Bree never says no at all.
In this book there was more than character growth, there was character change because Kristina became Bree, her evil twin. Some people could argue that Bree's personality is more exuberant then Kristina's. Bree hurt her family and her friends while Kristina was powerless to fight against the urge to use the monster. This is something Bree introduced Kristina to. When Kristina/Bree was in her darkest place she didn't know that her family was on her side. Kristina totally kept them in the dark about her pregnancy, her urge for crank and her sudden change in personality. If only she would of know she wasn't alone, maybe Kristina wouldn't be in such bad shape if her family could help her abolish Bree and bring back Kristina.
